Cruise Industry Health A Carnival

You’d be forgiven for expecting the Cruise Industry to sink rather than swim in times of financial crisis. Or perhaps, in times of dire financial need, those who can afford to flaunt their wealth are all the more inclined to do so. Why sit at home worrying about VAT increases, public sector cuts and all that hubbub when you could be admiring the turn of the world on  Rhine river cruises? The latest line posting good news to industry analysts are Carnival Cruise Lines, subsidiary of the Carnival Corporation. The Carnival Corporation is the world’s largest cruise ship operator, so any good news from that quarter is a good sign for the industry’s health. Cunard, Holland American, Princess, P&O and Seabourn are all lines under Carnival Corporation control.

Carnival’s fourth quarter earnings were particularly encouraging, with income up 29 percent and $50 million more taken than in the same quarter of 2009. Carnival had sounded a note of caution for shareholders for fear of a slump after the three day immobilisation of the Carnival Splendor in November.. For 2011 the outlook looks stable, with increased prices masking a slight drop in capacity. Value for money extras are increasingly being bundled into such deals to lessen the impact of the increase in prices.

Another line, Regent Seven Seas, who own Oceania cruises also enjoyed a respectable 2010 period, posting their best yearly profits and revenues ever. Growth in the Regent line bodes extremely well for the industry, since they’re very much a repeat business line, courting second time cruisers that have had the Carnival experience. The super liners usually lure first-timers in with high capacities and cheap prices. All that is left wanting on such cruises is the hectic pace and the slightly impersonal crew to passenger ratio: Regent then swoop in to offer these aspects of the experience. And once you’ve truly caught the bug? Cruising is a very versatile business, and the length and location of a cruise is highly variable. The present and immense scale of growth in Nile cruises seems to be an especially potent sign of the times in cruising.
